Treasure Hunt in Taiwan

Travelling overseas is so much more than shopping and sightseeing. While the beautiful attractions should not be missed, four youth from the DST of YWCA also participated in “Taiwan Treasure Hunt”, a workcamp organised by VolTra.

Youth visited a non-governmental organisation working for children in Taichung and farmed with the children there. The farm and its products not only enable the NGO to be self-sufficient, but also offer a platform for children to build confidence. The youth learnt from, exchanged ideas and worked with volunteers from all over the world and local children in order to get the tasks done. Apart from engaging in a new experience, they also understood the importance of maintaining balance between human development and the natural ecosystems by gaining first-hand experience.

The footprint that youth made also extended to Tainan. “City Wanderer”, the campaign that they joined, encouraged them to interview local citizens about the cultural difference between Taiwan and Hong Kong in Mandarin and asked them to work in an unfamiliar environment for necessities exchange.

The breakthrough that youth has made allows them to engage in a new experience and get to know their own strengths and weaknesses. While the volunteering that they took part in has offered them unpaid work experience with connection with others and the community being extended, it also helped build their new identity as a volunteer.

Youth was working hard to turn over the soil.
Their endeavor had drawn the work to an end.
Youth then transplanted the little turnip into the soil.
