Event Summary of July 2017
Team of Floor Curling – An emerging sport for promoting serious leisure
地壺球運動中常用到的鼓勵說話，如「Good Curling、Good Way、Good Line」，亦有助凝聚整個團隊。
The DST of HKCS has been working hard to provide opportunities to youth for exposure. Floor curling is a kind of emerging sport originated from curling, which emphasizes on communication among team members. A great deal of teamwork goes into building strategies by team members beforehand, choosing the ideal path and placement of the stone, and the skills of the teammates who determine how closed to the desired result the stone will achieve.
After the experience phase, the DST gathered youth interested in floor curling to form a team. The four-day intensive training helped the team to set up its goals and strategies. The team finally won the second runner-up in a public competition held on 8 July.
Setting up a team is the first step towards motivating young people. By taking part in the training, they can develop various skills required for floor curling and also skills for good communication. Inviting young people to set up equipment and arrange the sport venue can enhance their independence and team spirit; while discussing the team’s strategies and slogans together can help build trust and strengthen communication within the team. “Good Curling”, “Good Way”, and “Good Line” are some of the common encouraging words used in floor curling which also help unite the team.
“Joining the competition has enabled me to find out my own ability. I have no fear of the eyes of others now!” said by the youth who took part in the competition. Floor curling has successfully enlightened youth to devote time and efforts in developing their own serious leisure and enhancing their ability. Apart from expanding their own support network, the young people have also realized that “positive encouragement works better than criticism”.
The young people are going to contribute to the DST by promoting floor curling to the others. They also plan to join the public competition to be organized in September.
Team members cheered and supported each other; the morale brought them to the knockout competition.
The competition enabled young people to recall their passion to serious leisure and regain a sense of achievement.
Having discussed and developed the strategies, the team leader gave instruction to teammates. They also cheered each other by shouting slogans of CLAP.
The efforts that young people had made have never disappointed them; the team finally won the second runner-up. With support and encouragement from their friends, the sport venue was filled with joy and harmony.
